Yesterday I saw a new bird in the garden. It is a stunning bird and I have learned that it is the African hoopoe. Unfortunately, it is one of the targets of an illegal trade in birds in Morocco. Hoopoes or their parts are used in traditional medicine and magic here. It showed up about mid-morning, before the day became too hot for any of the birds to be active. Up until a month ago, birds would appear in the garden very soon after the tree watering began, but that has almost completely stopped with the advent of temperature in the triple digits.
